From Trauma to Thriving: New England Patriot’s Ted Johnson’s Journey to Mental Health Wellbeing

On October 9th, we welcomed former New England Patriot Ted Johnson for a powerful discussion on mental health and asking for help. Explore photos, takeaways, and the impact of the event.

Event Retrospective

The Center of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPPS), BU’s CTE Center and Maritime Health hosted an event at WBUR City Space on October 9th, “From Trauma to Thriving.”

The event took place on World Mental Health Day. Ted Johnson, former New England Patriot, and three-time super bowl champion, highlighted his own journey to mental well-being, with him emphasizing that it starts with “asking for help,” just as he did himself.

Highlights

The event hosted over 150 attendees, with roughly 80% representing the BU student body. The event showcased the importance of these conversations around mental health. The evening also highlighted BU’s Dr. Alosco from the CTE center and the work being done to identify CTE symptoms prior to one’s passing.

Johnson’s ability to connect with audience members through his genuineness, humor, and humility created an atmosphere of authenticity and allowed for a rich discussion between Johnson and attendees.
