JoanRapp-3Joan C. Rapp coordinates training and Continuing Education in Psychiatric Rehabilitation to a wide audience of providers, researchers, consumers, families and others.  This includes workshops, conferences, summit meetings, online courses, webinars and webcasts.  She has worked in the field of rehabilitation and mental health for over 46 years as practitioner, supervisor, program developer, administrator and training specialist.  Her particular areas of interest are education and employment: supporting individuals in the road out of poverty.  She is President of the MA. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Assn. and active member of (US)PRA since 1976.

She was previously employed by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) for 27 years in management and program development capacities always with a focus on psychiatric rehabilitation. For five years she was Director of the Community Support Program federal initiative for Massachusetts (DMH). Prior to that she worked for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission for ten years as Supervisor of Mental Health Programs, Area Director and Rehabilitation Counselor. She served on the Center’s Advisory Board for the first five years.

Ms. Rapp has been instrumental in the development of Supported Employment, Supported Education, Rehabilitation Clubhouse Programs, Consumer Advocacy, family supports and other rehabilitation services. Much of her efforts were directed at creating local networks especially in the North East area. She has co-chaired and served on the coordinating committee of the Friends, Voices for Recovery and rehabilitation for 35 years which has provided over 100 forums on Rehabilitation and recovery topics around the state. She was one of the founders of the New England IAPSRS (now MA.- PRA, RI – PRA etc.) and is now the President of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.
